SEQUD were approached to install a 160mm diameter sewer on 1.4% grade from the basement of a building through to a manhole outside. We used our McLaughlan Petrol 20B Auger Borer to complete these works.
We encountered a number of problems before the commencement of works. These were that the invert level was over four metres above the basements ground level, and that we have to drill through the manhole wall and access in the building was very restrictive. Safety now became the most pressing concern. To combat these problems we had a working platform built and engineered to take the maximum load of the auger borer. Along with this a specialty fall arrest system was acquired for the two man crew to work in. Lighting was also a problem, but was easily overcome by the use of lighting towers.
Once drilling had commenced, the ground conditions encountered were far better than expected, being a dry fill material not the expected marine mud. We attempted to drill through to the manhole but were unsuccessful and had to use a small air hammer drill to mark the centre of the bore and jackhammer the remaining concrete from inside the manhole. The 160mm product pipe was then installed and the remaining void was then grout filled.
In all the job was a success and both the drilling crew and the customer were happy with the efforts and the end result. |
